Memphis Depay is being investigated by Conmebol after an alleged gesture aimed at Estudiantes supporters, according to De Telegraaf.
Pictures appear to show the Corinthians attacker raising his middle finger towards fans of the Argentine club after his team drew level during Wednesday’s Copa Libertadores quarter-final.
The episode is the latest turn in Depay’s turbulent time at the Brazilian side. In August, there was another twist in the former Manchester United forward’s Corinthians story when the club let him go amid a financial dispute.
After that, Depay signed a contract extension with Corinthians just days before this latest controversy, giving greater short-term certainty over his playing future.
Corinthians then took on Estudiantes in the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals on Wednesday. The match ended 1-1, with Kaio César scoring the equaliser for the Brazilian outfit.
Estudiantes then filed a formal complaint with South American football’s governing body, asking for action to be taken against the Netherlands international.
The gesture came immediately after Kaio César scored in the 49th minute. Video in circulation appears to show Depay turning towards the Estudiantes section before lifting his middle finger.
Estudiantes said the act “was unmistakably directed against our supporters”.
The Argentine club also said: “Estudiantes once again emphasises the importance of adhering to the motto that states that respect is the foundation.”
Even so, the possible punishment remains uncertain. South American media quoted in the Dutch report say there are no clearly defined sanctions for violating the relevant regulations.
Conmebol must now review the complaint, the footage available and the wider context before deciding what disciplinary measure, if any, should be imposed.
Now 32, Depay arrived at United with huge promise, but his form and evident ability failed to fully take off there and he was eventually moved on.
He later played for Lyon, Barcelona and Atletico before moving to South America, where he now represents Corinthians, one of Brazil’s biggest clubs.
Memphis is the all-time top scorer for the Netherlands men’s national team.
Conmebol has opened an investigation into Depay.
Estudiantes submitted a formal complaint after the match.
The gesture came after Corinthians’ 49th-minute equaliser.
No sanction has yet been decided, but Dutch media expects him to face a lengthy ban.
