WhatsApp: WhatsApp has implemented a new charge for International One-Time Password (OTP). Businesses in India will now have to pay more for sending such messages. Its objective is to increase earnings from business messaging services on the platform. This charge has now been increased by 20 times, but it is still much less than the international SMS rate. This move of WhatsApp is expected to increase the company's earnings.
The decision will be implemented from June 1
According to the report of Economic Times, this change will help WhatsApp to bring more companies into the business messaging sector. WhatsApp has recently created a new message category called "Authentication-International". Its price is Rs 2.3 per message. This will affect both India and Indonesia. This decision of WhatsApp will cause more problems for international companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. Earlier these companies used WhatsApp because it was cheaper.
Why was this change made?
Earlier, Indian companies used to charge SMS at 12 paise per message, while foreign companies used to charge Rs 4.13. To reduce this gap, WhatsApp had given a flat rate of Rs 11 to everyone. But now foreign companies will have to pay Rs 2.3. New rates of WhatsApp are starting from India. This shows how important India is for WhatsApp's business messaging.
Good growth is being recorded in enterprise messaging in India. At present this market in India is worth more than Rs 7600 crore. This includes SMS, WhatsApp Business, Google RCS, and Push Notification. Currently SMS market is 90%. Companies mostly send messages for OTP.
Meaning of International SMS
There has been a lot of debate about the high charges for international SMS in India. Telecom companies say that there are no clear rules regarding "International Traffic" and there is no one to monitor its prices. Telecom companies decide which SMS will be considered foreign. Telecom companies say that the price of SMS is decided according to the location of the data server.
