WhatsApp International OTP: Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has launched a new category of International one-time passwords (OTPs). This move by WhatsApp is expected to increase the company's earnings. The company currently has more than 2 billion users. It is used extensively not only for messaging but also for tasks like voice calling, video calling, and document sharing. More than Rs 2 will be charged for sending messages on WhatsApp.
The price of international messages has increased 20 times more than before. It is being said that this is still much less than the international SMS rate. However, common users will continue to use WhatsApp for free as before. The new decision will affect business SMS. Currently SMS market is 90%. Companies mostly send messages for OTP.
The new decision will come into effect from June 1, 2024
According to media reports, under the new international message category of WhatsApp, Rs 2.3 will have to be paid per message. This rule will come into effect from June 1, 2024. Its impact can be seen on the business of both India and Indonesia. WhatsApp's new decision will increase the communication budget of international companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. Let us tell you that normal international verification is quite expensive and if a user does the verification through WhatsApp then the charges would be less. But now the company has also made WhatsApp verification expensive. Enterprise messaging is growing rapidly in India. Its market share has reached around Rs 7600 crore. This includes messages like SMS, push messages, OTP verification, application login, financial transactions, and service delivery.
Why was this change made?
Earlier, Indian companies used to charge SMS at 12 paise per message. Whereas foreign companies had to pay Rs 4.13. To reduce this gap, WhatsApp had given a flat rate of Rs 11 to everyone. But now foreign companies will have to pay Rs 2.3. New rates of WhatsApp are starting from India. This shows how important India is for WhatsApp's business messaging.
