The central government has issued a warning to mobile users regarding calls coming on WhatsApp. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the Ministry of Communications has recently asked citizens to be alert about calls coming from certain numbers. According to the Telecom Ministry, in these calls, mobile users are being threatened that their mobile numbers will be switched off.

These callers, posing as government officials, threaten mobile users that their numbers are being used for some illegal activities. DoT has also issued an advisory regarding WhatsApp calls from such numbers of foreign origin as 92-xxxxxxxxx. The Department of Telecommunications has also advised citizens to report on cyber crime helpline number 1930 or www.cybercrime.gov.in in case they become victims of cyber crime or financial fraud.

The Telecom Ministry has warned mobile users that cyber criminals try to steal personal information through such calls to commit cyber crimes/financial frauds. It further states that DoT does not authorize anyone to make such calls on its behalf. The government has said that people should be alert and do not share any information when receiving such calls.

How to report fraud
DoT has advised citizens to report these calls. By visiting Sancharsathi portal (www.sancharsathi.gov.in), mobile users can report fraud through the link ‘Report Suspected Fraud Communications’. In this way, the Department of Telecommunications will be helped in preventing misuse of telecom resources including cyber crime, financial fraud.
