New Delhi: Some WhatsApp users have recently been receiving calls from fraud numbers where callers threaten mobile users that their mobile numbers would be disconnected. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) recently issued an advisory to citizens about these calls and urged users to remain vigilant.
These callers claim that their numbers are being misused in some illegal activities and threaten mobile users.
The DoT has also issued advisory about WhatsApp calls from foreign origin mobile numbers. These numbers: like +92-xxxxxxxxxx -- impersonate government officials and dupe people.
These frauds not only threaten mobile users but also steal personal information to carry out cyber-crime/financial frauds. The DoT said it does not authorise anyone to make such calls on its behalf.
It has also advised people to stay vigilant and asked not to share any information on receiving such calls.
How To Report Fraud Calls
The DoT has advised citizens to report such fraud calls at ‘Chakshu-Report Suspected Fraud Communications’ facility of Sanchar Saathi portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in).
This can help DoT prevent misuse of telecom resources for cyber-crime, financial frauds, etc. Further, citizens can check the mobile connections in their name at ‘Know Your Mobile Connections’ facility of Sanchar Saathi portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in) and report any mobile connection not taken by them or not required.
The DoT has also advised citizens to report at cyber-crime helpline number 1930 or www.cybercrime.gov.in in case of a victim of cyber-crime or financial fraud.
