WhatsApp is used by millions of people around the world. People are using it to stay connected with their family and relatives. But scammers have greatly affected this platform. Recently a group scam has surfaced in which they are keeping an eye on people's accounts. Let's know about it.
Technology Desk, New Delhi. Meta's WhatsApp is used by millions of people around the world. In such a situation, scams related to it are also increasing rapidly. Let us tell you that a new WhatsApp scam is targeting users.
This is leading them to join fake group chats and causing financial losses to their families. Here's how this scam works and how to stay safe from it.
How the scam works
- Fake Caller: You receive a call from someone who pretends to be your friend or acquaintance and often uses a familiar profile photo and display name.
- Fake OTP: The scammer claims to send a One Time Passcode (OTP) to join the group call.
- Account takeover: Now they convince you to share the OTP, which allows them to register your WhatsApp on another device and steal your account.
- Blocking two-step verification: Once in control, they enable two-step verification, locking you out. Scammers then send messages to your contacts and ask for money under false pretenses.
How to keep it safe?
- Two-step verification- Enable two-step verification in your WhatsApp settings for an added layer of security. This sends a separate code to your registered phone to verify changes made to the account.
- Never share your PIN: Remember, never share your six-digit WhatsApp verification code with anyone, even acquaintances.
- Verify via voice call: If you get a suspicious message, even if it's from someone you know, call them or request a voice message to confirm their identity.
Be alert and informed to avoid falling prey to this WhatsApp group chat scam. By following these simple steps, you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe.
