WhatsApp for Android is testing a new feature that allows users to transcribe voice messages. It was discovered by the feature tracker in the beta version of the WhatsApp app for the Android platform. It may allow users to send and receive transcribed voice messages. Apparently a similar feature was introduced a few months ago in the beta version of WhatsApp for iOS, and now it is also coming to the Android platform.

Transcription of voice messages

According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, a new banner could appear under Voice Transcriptions asking users if they would like to receive transcriptions of the voice messages they send and receive. This feature was reportedly discovered in WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.24.15.5.

It is speculated that this feature may be useful in situations where it is not possible to listen to recorded sounds on instant messaging platforms. Additionally, users who exchange long voice messages can be better understood by receiving a transcription. The voice message transcription feature supports five languages: English, Hindi, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, and Spanish.

The feature tracker claims that the voice message transcription option is available to some beta testers using the latest Android beta version of WhatsApp via the Google Play beta app. Gadget 360 staff could not confirm whether this feature is available in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android. However, the rollout might be slower for users.

Other properties

WhatsApp is reportedly testing another feature – a video note mode exclusive to the camera interface. With this change, a Record Video Notes button may appear in the camera interface alongside the available video and photo options. This is said to have been discovered in the beta version of WhatsApp on both Android and iOS platforms.
