The incident took place after the two warring sides failed to settle a land dispute during a meeting at the police station. The incident was captured on CCTV. The accused, identified as 22-year-old Gaurav, has been arrested.
A woman was set on fire by her son in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh reportedly over a family dispute regarding land. The man also made a video as people made desperate attempts to save his mother, say reports. The woman suffered 40% burns and died during treatment at a hospital. The accused has been arrested.
The incident, captured on CCTV, took place on Tuesday afternoon at Khair police station in Aligarh.
The CCTV footage showed the woman - who was doused with petrol - running into the police station as she was chased by her son. She is later set on fire by her son, who the cops have identified as Gaurav.
A huge ball of fire erupts on the police station premises, forcing the people to back off. Her son then starts recording the ghastly scene.
Some of the cops reportedly also suffered burn injuries while trying to extinguish the fire. The woman was rushed to a hospital but died during treatment, according to cops.
"Soon after the woman went out. When she returned, her son set her on fire. The incident was caught on camera," Sanjiv Suman, Senior Superintendent of Police, was quoted as saying by NDTV.
Gaurav has been arrested by the police.
The family has been shown the video, said the officer.
"The son had set her on fire before the police could intervene. The cops also suffered burns while trying to extinguish the fire. The woman was immediately rushed to a hospital," the cop added.
