A 28-year-old man, Mohammed Haseen, allegedly strangled his 17-year-old sister to death in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh for having an affair with a boy from another religion.
A disturbing incident of ‘honour killing’ has come to the fore in the Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh where a 17-year-old girl was strangled to death by her 28-year-old brother who was angry with her for having a romantic relationship with a man belonging to a different religion and her desire to marry him.The shocking incident took place on Wednesday morning when the accused, Mohammad Haseen, allegedly strangled his 17-year-old sister to death in the middle of the road, even as onlookers and neighbours, who heard the commotion, stood silent, while some shot videos of the act, yet nobody came to the minor’s rescue.
The girl’s body lay in the middle of the road in the village as many passed but none lifted a finger to help her, according to a report by the Indian Express.
As per the police, the brother-sister duo had a heated argument over the latter’s love affair with a boy belonging to another community and the accused in a fit of rage strangled her to death.
“We have arrested one Haseen, who strangled his minor sister following an argument in the Inchauli Police Station area,” said Superintendent of Police (Rural) Kamlesh Bahadur.
Giving details, the officer said the murdered girl was involved in a romantic relationship with an 18-year-old boy from a different religious community against the wishes of her family, especially her brother who vehemently opposed it.
The girl had eloped with the boy a few months ago, however, she was brought back and the man was sent to jail in a kidnapping case, the SP said, adding that tensions continued at the girl’s house after her return as she insisted upon marrying her lover.
“The girl’s family wanted to get her married but she used to have arguments with them over the matter. As per information provided by the neighbours, on Wednesday morning, she had an argument with her brother about marrying the man of her choice,” Bahadur said.
“Her brother Haseen got enraged during the argument and strangled her,” the SP said, adding that the girl’s brother, Haseen has been arrested and the body of the victim has been sent for post-mortem.
Further investigation in the case is underway, police said.
