Since its inception, WhatsApp has always borrowed mobile contacts this started to get complicated when the app added multi-device and multi-account support. It will be even more complicated when usernames become an alternative to traditional phone number-based contacts in the future.

The application has then been forced to follow in the footsteps of other messaging applications, such as Telegram or Messenger, and Sync contacts so that we can recover them when we change our mobile. Until now, WhatsApp has never synchronized contacts but instead uses the contacts saved on the mobile which are generally synchronized with the Google account.

Synchronizing contacts in WhatsApp

WhatsApp reads your phone’s contacts to suggest people to send a message to and fill in the names in the app. This solution has been sufficient for many years but falls short when usernames could arrive on WhatsApp at any time. Usernames are a form of contacts specific to WhatsApp and therefore will not be saved in the traditional contacts on the mobile.

We now know that WhatsApp is preparing for the first time the sync contacts in the account which will be optional. If activated, our contacts can be included in the backup and should also be transferred if we use WhatsApp on a linked device.

It will also serve us If we use two WhatsApp accounts on the same mobile phone in this case we will be able to have a different contact list for each account, something quite useful since until now they used the same contacts, those on the mobile.

Specifically, WhatsApp indicates that this synchronization of contacts will allow us to choose which contacts will be synchronized with our mobile and Manage WhatsApp contacts on linked devices as well as keeping the contacts of each WhatsApp account separate from each other.

We don’t yet know all the ins and outs of how WhatsApp contact syncing will work, though we certainly know that It’s going to be a little more complicated than the current method. This is inevitable, as WhatsApp is much more complicated today than it was a few years ago, making this type of change inevitable.
