A 40-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly killing her neighbour’s 3-year-old son and hiding his body in a washing machine, police said.
The incident took place in the Radhapuram area of Tirunelveli district.
Following a tip off by the deceased’s family, the suspect’s house was searched and body was found there, said police.
The villagers are in shock since the incident came to light. Longstanding enmity is said to be the reason behind this murder.
The victim’s father is a local construction worker.
According to police, the boy went missing when he was playing outside his home on Monday morning. His mother was preparing to take him to the local anganwadi.
“Police were informed at Radhapuram station. The family suspected their neighbour with whom they had a history of disputes. Based on this lead, we conducted a search of the neighbour’s house and found Sanjay’s body inside a washing machine. The woman has been arrested and is currently being interrogated,” said a senior officer monitoring the probe.
Their long standing enmity is a result of a land dispute, between the two families. The accused woman had recently lost her own son in a road accident, an event that reportedly left her emotionally unstable, police said.
Superintendent of Police N Silambarasan and Deputy Superintendent R Yogesh Kumar visited the crime scene, and ordered a special team to probe the case.
