This year, the UP government is providing free LPG cylinders to 1.85 crore beneficiaries on Diwali under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, while last year 85 lakh women were provided free LPG cylinders. It is to be noted that under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, apart from Diwali, one LPG cylinder will be provided free of charge on Holi.
Subsidy by Central and State Governments
Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the central government provides a subsidy of Rs 300 per LPG cylinder and the rest is provided by the state government. Under this scheme, the beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme have to pay and purchase an LPG cylinder. After that, the grant amount will be transferred to their account. Note that a bank account should be linked with an Aadhaar card to avail of the benefits of this scheme.
Meanwhile, LPG cylinder distribution association executives have announced that there will be no gas cylinder distribution in Tamil Nadu on October 26. The Cylinder Distribution Employees Union is planning to hold a protest across Tamil Nadu, demanding various demands including minimum wages.
Labour department officials and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin have been requested to intervene in this matter and fix the minimum wages for the cylinder distribution employees.
The protest, which is scheduled to take place a couple of days before Diwali, will be a hassle for the people of Tamil Nadu during the festive season.
