A man from Uttar Pradesh was rescued by the police after allegedly being held hostage for a ransom of Rs 3 lakh by a woman he met on a “blind date". The woman and two other accused were arrested from Jhansi, officials said.
According to the police, the man from Lalitpur district, identified as 50-year-old Lallu Chaubey, received a call from some people on November 8 (Friday) who later held him hostage by demanding a ransom of Rs 3 lakh. Out of the total ransom amount demanded, Rs 1 lakh was already paid, Lalitpur SP Mohammad Mushtaq told PTI.
On Saturday (November 9), police conducted a raid and rescued Chaubey while the three accused Akhilesh Ahirwar (30), Satish Singh Bundela (27) and the woman Kiran (35) were arrested.
Explaining the modus operandi of an alleged gang that targeted Chaubey, the police said the accused told them that many women are associated with them. They first make a woman call a man over the phone and ask him to meet her in Jhansi when the gang holds him hostage, they said.
Mushtaq said action is being taken against the accused under the Gangster Act and an investigation is underway to trace other gang members. The officer said the case was registered on a complaint from the victim’s son, who reportedly received the ransom call.
According to reports, police formed multiple teams with a constable posing as the son, who went to give the ransom. One of the accused then took the cop to a location where Chaubey was being held hostage.
