Mainak Pal, who lived with his wife, daughter and parents, had travelled to Uttarakhand with his two friends on a short trip.
A 44-year-old professor at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University was found dead in a lodge room in Uttarakhand with cuts on his hands and throat slit, said police, adding that they suspect suicide.
Mainak Pal, who lived with his wife, daughter and parents, had travelled to Uttarakhand with his two friends on a short trip. While his friends continued on their trip, Pal decided to come back to Kolkata.
He checked into a hotel in Lalkuan to board a train to Kolkata the next morning. He reportedly missed his daughter and wished to return back home, according to NDTV.
On Friday evening, Pal was unreachable over phone calls after his family members tried several times to reach out to him. Under panic, Pal’s family called the hotel, prompting the staff members to break the door of his room.
They found the professor’s body lying in the bathroom with deep cuts on his hands and neck and blood splattered on the floor. Subsequently, the police were informed about the matter.
‘JU Family Shell-Shocked’
The Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association has said Pal left a deep imprint as a teacher. “We are in deep shock since we heard about his death," Partha Pratim Roy, the general secretary of the teachers’ body, said in a statement.
“Pal was a lovable person and popular among students and the fraternity. The entire JU family is shell-shocked," Roy said, adding that his sudden death has shocked everyone in the university.
The professor was an alumnus of Presidency College, Kolkata and worked in two West Bengal government colleges before returning to Presidency University as a teacher. He joined Jadavpur University in 2022 as an associate professor.
