France Crisis: Prez Macron vows to stay in office; promises to appoint new PM as Barnier resigns

French PM Michel Barnier was ousted by a vote of no-confidence by opposition lawmakers in the National Assembly on Dec 4. Rumours were doing the rounds about Macron resigning too as the French President. However, refuting all the rumours of resignation, French President Emmanuel Macron vowed to remain in office. Addressing the nation from the Elysee Palace on Dec 6, Macron emphasized his commitment to completing his five-year mandate. He pledged to appoint a new PM in the coming days, who would form a government of general interest to address country’s challenges. Macron praised Barnier for his dedication and thanked him for his service as the shortest-lived French PM tendered his resignation.
