As the new year approaches, Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) subscribers are in for good news! The Ministry of Labor and Employment has initiated steps to streamline the claim settlement process. With the formation of a five-member committee, the focus is on implementing an enhanced automated system that will benefit more than 75 million EPFO members.
Key Changes in EPFO Claim Settlement 1. Auto Claim Settlement to ExpandEPFO currently facilitates automatic settlements for:
- Partial withdrawals (up to ₹1 lakh) for housing, education, and marriage.
- Medical claims, which earlier had a cap of ₹50,000.
- Pension claims under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS).
The new changes aim to:
- Expand the scope of auto claim settlements.
- Eliminate manual intervention by improving backend processes.
A committee led by G Madhumita Das, the financial advisor to the ministry, will submit its recommendations by mid-January 2025. The objectives are:
- Improve the technical efficiency of the auto-claim system.
- Reduce the rejection rate by minimizing unnecessary verification steps.
- Enhance the overall user experience for EPFO members.
Internal assessments highlight key issues:
- Only 40% of claims are processed automatically, while 60% face rejections due to verification problems.
- 27 backend checks are currently required before the settlement process begins, which causes delays.
- Manual processing for rejected claims extends the settlement timeline significantly.
- Total Claims Settled: 44.5 million
- Settlement Timelines:
- 13.9 million claims settled within 3 days.
- 14.3 million claims took 10 days.
- 14.5 million claims required 20 days.
- 1.8 million claims exceeded 20 days.
- Provident Fund (PF): 40.9 million claims (final settlements, advances, partial withdrawals).
- Pension-Related: 3.45 million claims.
- Insurance Claims (EDLI): 75,000.
With the new system:
- Claim rejections will drop significantly.
- Settlement timelines will be reduced further, enabling faster access to funds.
- Employees will enjoy a hassle-free experience, ensuring better financial security.
This reform is poised to enhance trust in the EPFO system and provide timely financial assistance to millions of workers across the country.
