The parents of Suchir Balaji, an Indian-American technologist who was discovered dead in his San Francisco residence on December 14, 2024, are calling for a murder probe and have rejected the official suicide verdict. Former OpenAI employee Balaji was well-known for raising ethical issues about generative AI.

Poornima Rao, Balaji’s mother, voiced her shock at the suicide judgment, pointing to the results of a private autopsy that disproved the cause of death determined by the police. To raise awareness to the matter, she tagged prominent people on social media, such as California Governor Gavin Newsom and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, and demanded an FBI inquiry.

The parents told NDTV that the second autopsy report contradicted the first suicide finding by revealing evidence of struggle, including head injuries. According to Poornima Rao, the absence of a suicide note strengthened their conviction that it was a murder rather than a suicide. “We have evidence of struggle and head trauma from the second autopsy. “This is a murder, not a suicide,” she said.

Balaji Ramamurthi, Balaji’s father, recalled their last chat with Suchir on December 22, after he had returned cheerfully from a vacation to Los Angeles. His father noted, “He seemed happy,” and that Suchir had not taken a new job since leaving OpenAI, most likely because of limitations.

Suchir’s illuminating interview with the New York Times and his eventual death resulted from his mother’s suggestion that he had been stifled by OpenAI and that he had discussed his concerns with a copyright lawyer.

According to reports, Suchir, who contributed to the basic development of ChatGPT, was prohibited from collaborating with other AI firms. According to his mother, Suchir had been investigating the limits of generative AI and intended to publish his results, which included moral dilemmas including disinformation and content theft.

For the sake of learning the truth about Suchir’s death, the family is requesting an FBI inquiry. Additionally, they praised Elon Musk’s assistance after his statement that “This doesn’t seem like a suicide.” Condolences were also sent by an OpenAI representative, who said, “Our hearts go out to Suchir’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

To pay for legal fees and a thorough investigation, the Balaji family has started a GoFundMe page. His parents bemoaned Suchir’s passing as a loss to mankind and the IT sector, describing him as a kind and intelligent person.
