The life-threatening attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his Mumbai home has triggered a political attack on the Devendra Fadnavis government, with Maharashtra Opposition questioning the Maximum City's law and order situation. "If celebrities are not safe, who in Mumbai is", Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi Chaturvedi.
Saif, 54, received multiple injuries after an intruder attacked him with a knife at his residence in Bandra in the early hours of Thursday. He suffered six stab injuries and one was deep, close to the spine.
"What a shame that Mumbai sees another high-profile attempt on life, the attack on Saif Ali Khan yet again raises questions on Mumbai Police and the Home Minister. This is after a series of incidents that show there is a deliberate attempt to undermine Mumbai by targeting big names," the Rajya Sabha MP from Shiv Sena (UBT) said on X.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) MP referred to the killing of veteran politician Baba Siddique and the firing outside actor Salman Khan's home as she claimed that there is a "deliberate attempt to undermine Mumbai by targeting big names".
"Baba Siddique ji's family is still awaiting justice after his shocking murder. Salman Khan was forced to live in a bulletproof house. Now it is Saif Ali Khan All in Bandra. An area which has the highest concentration of celebrities is supposed to have adequate security. If celebrities are not safe then who in Mumbai is? Wishing Saif Ali Khan a speedy recovery," Chaturvedi said.
The Sharad Pawar-led NCP camp said that the attack on high-profile people such as Saif Ali Khan in his homes raises serious questions about the safety of common citizens.
"The attack on Saif Ali Khan is a cause for concern because if such high profile people with levels of security can be attacked in their homes, then what could happen to common citizens? Fear of law seems to be at a low in Maharashtra due to leniencies in the past couple of years," Clyde Crasto, the spokesperson for the Sharad Pawar-led NCP camp, said in a post on X.
Congress MP Varsha Gaekwad said she was "extremely shocked at this brazen attack" in Bandra, which is considered a safe neighbourhood.
NCP (SP) Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule, a friend of Kareena Kapoor Khan's family, said the incident was worrisome.
Amid the criticisms, BJP MLA Ram Kadam said that a probe has been ordered into the incident. "The Police will investigate the incident and no one will be spared. Police are responsible to ensure such an incident does not repeat," he said in a video message.
Saif Ali Khan was attacked during an "attempted burglary" at his residence at 3:30 AM, the actor's team said in a statement. He was taken to the Lilavati Hospital in Bandra and was reported to be out of danger, the official said.
Saif Ali Khan is best known for his performances in films like "Omkara", "Dil Chahta Hai", "Kal Ho Naa Ho" and "Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior".
He will be seen next in "Jewel Thief - The Red Sun Chapter", a heist drama.
