Following the deaths of three family members in Kolkata, police have pointed to the younger brother as a key suspect in the murders, reports PTI.
The bodies of two women and a teenage girl from the Dey family were found at their Tangra home on February 19. Earlier in the week, three other relatives, including two brothers and one of their sons, were injured in a car accident on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.
Pranay and Prasun Dey, the two brothers, lived in the house with their wives, Sudeshna and Romi, as well as their children. The injured boy, in a statement to the police, identified his uncle as the person who killed his mother, aunt, and cousin.
Police say circumstantial evidence strongly suggests that the younger brother was involved in the killings, although they also believe Pranay, the older brother, was part of the planning.
The teenage girl had reportedly learned about the plot and resisted consuming a porridge laced with sleeping pills and high blood pressure medication. She was allegedly forced to ingest it and showed signs of physical abuse, including bruises around her lips.
The police were informed about the deaths by one of the crash survivors. They were reportedly under financial stress after their tannery business faced losses after the COVID-19 pandemic.
