Speaking on his Independent Travel Podcast, travel guru Simon Calder said he's on a "personal campaign" to persuade more people to visit the coastal town of Cascais. To the west of Lisbon, Cascais is positioned on the "Portuguese Riviera" where visitors can expect to see "an intriguing combination of sun-worn houses, cafés, shops and smart hotels".
Easily walkable, with modest temperatures of around 15C across winter, Cascais is an ideal place to escape the cold snap in the UK. The fishing town and port first developed into a seaside resort back in the 19th century, and the place has attracted travellers ever since. Described as "one of Portugal's top beach destinations" by Lonely Planet, there's a wide appeal during the summery months, but there's much to do off-season too.
There's the historic centre, just 2km long - so walkable within the hour - that is mainly pedestrianised.
And if you fancy a walk through the park, then Parque Marechal Carmona is centrally located with its sprawling lawns, ponds and picnic areas.
During December, the park turns into a Christmassy village with Christmas markets, light illuminations and festive performances.
Moreover, there is much to see at Cascais' Museum Quarter, which has 13 museums and galleries.
Then there's the option to stretch your legs along the 3km seafront on the promenade where you can enjoy regular breaks at the cafes and restaurants en route.
In December, the famous Ferris wheel will feature at Cascais Bay alongside other merry and bright features.
How to get to Cascais
Fly into Lisbon from your local airport and take the "Linha de Cascais" urban railway, which departs from Cais do Sodré train station in Lisbon.
Alternatively, you can book a taxi from Lisbon to Cascais, which should cost around €25 to €35.
