IND vs SA: Fans and analysts have harshly criticized India’s current head coach, Gautam Gambhir, citing concerns about his teaching methods. The fact that India has lost two Test series at home lends credence to the argument. India is sometimes referred to be unbeatable at home, but recent whitewashes over South Africa and New Zealand have hurt their hopes of making it to the 2027 World Test Championship final.

The position of head coaches nowadays is more about “managing” players than truly instructing them, according to former India captain Kapil Dev, who reflected on Gambhir’s coaching approach.

Gambhir has also come under fire for his dependence on part-timers and his consistent batting order chances in the T20I format.

“The term “coach” is used a lot these days. It is impossible for Gautam Gambhir to coach. At the Indian Chamber of Commerce ICC Centenary Session, Kapil said, “He can be a manager of the team.”

“Coach is where I learn in both school and college. My coach was among those individuals. “They can control me,” he continued.

“How can you be a coach when they have named, let’s say, anybody a leg spinner?” Kapil said. How is it possible for Gautam to train a wicketkeeper or a leg spinner?

“I believe you must cope. That’s more crucial. “When you become a manager, the young boys look up to you, so you give them encouragement to say you can do it,” he remarked.

How can my manager or captain console me? That’s their responsibility; they should constantly reassure the squad that they can do better. That’s my perspective on it.

As captain, Kapil said that he supported teammates who were going through a difficult time.

“I believe it’s important to console those who aren’t doing well. “I don’t want to have dinner and drinks with someone who made a hundred,” he said.

“A large number of individuals are present… In my capacity as captain, I like having dinner or drinks with folks who aren’t performing.

“That’s what happens when you give them the confidence they need.” As a captain, it is crucial, in my opinion, because your job is not only to lead the squad; it is also to bring them together.”
