Veteran Bollywood singer Kumar Sanu has found himself at the centre of a legal storm with his personal life once again making headlines. The playback legend has recently filed a defamation case against his former wife Rita Bhattacharya accusing her of making statements that have damaged his reputation. While initial reports suggested a compensation demand of Rs 30 lakh Rita has now claimed that the amount mentioned in the legal notice is a staggering Rs 50 crore. What did Rita Bhattacharya say about the legal notice? In an interview with Bombay Times Rita Bhattacharya expressed shock and disbelief over the lawsuit. She revealed that the documents sent to her clearly mention a Rs 50 crore compensation claim. “I am in complete shock. He is filing a case against the mother of his three grown-up sons” Rita said. “The papers I received clearly state Rs 50 crore. I honestly don’t understand how Kumar Sanu imagines that I have this kind of money. It’s extremely painful.” Her remarks have added a fresh layer of emotional intensity to the already bitter legal dispute between the former couple. How is the case affecting their children? Rita further shared that the ongoing legal battle has had a direct emotional impact on their children. She appealed to Kumar Sanu to reconsider his actions especially as a father. “I will face him in court” she said adding “but folded hands I request him to at least try to be a better human being and the father of my three children. If you cannot love us at least stop harassing and troubling us.” Kumar Sanu and Rita Bhattacharya separated in 1994 and share three sons. Why did Kumar Sanu file the defamation case? Earlier this week Kumar Sanu moved the Bombay High Court alleging that Rita’s recent interviews and social media statements had severely tarnished his public image. The singer’s legal team has maintained that the allegations made by Rita are false defamatory and in violation of their divorce agreement. In previous interviews with platforms like Viral Bhayani and Film Window Rita had accused Kumar Sanu of mistreating her during pregnancy claiming she was denied proper food and medical care. These allegations were strongly denied by the singer’s legal representatives who termed them “baseless” and “malicious.” What does their divorce agreement say? According to the defamation plea Kumar Sanu and Rita’s 2001 divorce settlement clearly stated that neither party would make public allegations against the other. The singer’s legal team claims that Rita has breached this agreement by speaking openly about their past. The couple had married in 1986 separated after seven years and were officially divorced in 2001. As the legal battle unfolds the case has drawn significant public attention highlighting how long-settled personal disputes can resurface decades later this time inside a courtroom.
