A promising 16-year-old jockey has tragically died after being thrown from his horse during the closing stages of a race. Joaquim Pavoski Dapper was competing at the Gavea Hippodrome in Rio de Janeiro when he suffered the horrific fall in the final metres of the race, losing his balance and being unseated from his saddle while surrounded by other horses.
The teenager struck the track with force in front of shocked onlookers, prompting medical teams to rush to the fallen rider's aid. Joaquim was immediately transported by ambulance to Miguel Couto Hospital in a critical state as doctors battled to stabilise his condition.
The accident took place on December 9, and he was subsequently moved to Pasteur Hospital for specialist treatment.
Despite receiving medical care, his condition deteriorated and he sadly passed away.
The Brazilian Jockey Club released a statement expressing their grief over the young rider's death. And they explained: "We reiterate our commitment to supporting sports professionals in all circumstances and thank everyone who followed J. Pavoski's career.
Born in Faxinalzinho, in northern Rio Grande do Sul with a population of approximately 2,500, he began riding four years earlier at the age of 12.
Joaquim had been considered a rising star in Brazilian horse racing and relocated to Rio to pursue his ambitions.
He had made his professional debut merely three months prior at the Gavea Hippodrome, astonishing spectators by claiming victory in his maiden race.
Tributes have flooded in from his hometown, with the city hall and municipal council releasing a joint statement which read: "In this moment of pain and dismay.
"The Municipal Administration expresses its most sincere condolences to the family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing Joaquim."
