Google Emergency Location Service: Every second is precious during an emergency. In such situations, it's crucial that your precise location reaches emergency services. Google has launched its special safety feature in India, starting with Uttar Pradesh.
Google Emergency Location Service: One of the biggest problems in any emergency is communicating your location to others. This becomes even more difficult if you're in an unfamiliar location. However, Google's new feature has solved this problem. Google has launched its Emergency Location Service (ELS) for Android users in India. If you find yourself in an emergency, this feature will help you easily share your precise location with the police, ambulance, or fire brigade. Currently, this service is only available for Android users; it has not yet been launched for iOS.
Service Launched in Uttar Pradesh
Significantly, this service has been launched in Uttar Pradesh, where ELS has been fully implemented for Android devices. This means that in UP, there will be no time wasted in locating the caller during an emergency call, and help will arrive much faster. As soon as any Android user in UP dials the emergency number 112, their location will be automatically activated and shared with emergency centers.
What is ELS Service?
Emergency Location Service (ELS) is a safety feature pre-installed in Google's Android operating system. Its purpose is to make emergency assistance faster and more accurate. When a user calls or sends an SMS to the emergency number 112, ELS automatically determines the phone's location using GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile networks and shares it with the police, ambulance, or fire brigade. The best part is that the user doesn't need to manually share their location. This feature is completely free and is only activated during emergency calls, ensuring user privacy.
How will this ELS service work?
According to Google, ELS uses GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile networks to determine the user's location. The company claims that this feature can track a person's location with an accuracy of up to 50 meters, making emergency response faster than ever before. However, this feature requires support from local emergency and wireless infrastructure to function. Uttar Pradesh has taken the first step in this direction in India, where ELS has been fully operationalized for Android devices. The UP Police, in collaboration with Pert Telecom Solutions, has integrated this feature with the emergency number 112.
The biggest advantage of this feature is that even if the emergency call connects and then drops, the emergency services will still receive the user's precise location. This means that network issues or dropped calls will not hinder assistance. In addition, this feature shares your device's language details along with your location to the emergency services, allowing emergency responders to understand which language to use when communicating with the user in distress.
Which phones will have this service?
This Google safety feature is already available on phones running Android 6 and above. Importantly, users do not need to download any separate app to use this feature. It will automatically activate only during emergencies.
