Google is set to introduce a long-awaited feature that will allow users to change their primary @gmail.com username, marking a significant shift in how digital identities are managed on the platform. The option, expected to roll out gradually starting in 2026, will enable users to modify the part of their email address that appears before “@gmail.com”.
Until now, Gmail usernames were permanent. Users unhappy with outdated or unprofessional email handles had to create an entirely new Google account, often losing seamless access to existing data and services. The upcoming update aims to remove this limitation while retaining account continuity.
How the change will work
According to updated Google support documentation, users will be able to edit their Gmail username without affecting the underlying Google account. The key aspects of the feature include:
-
Alias system: The original Gmail address will be retained as an alias. Users can continue logging in with the old address, and emails sent to it will automatically be delivered to the new inbox.
-
Data preservation: All linked data, including Google Drive files, Photos, YouTube subscriptions, contacts, and Maps history, will remain intact and associated with the same account.
-
Usage limits: Google will allow users to change their Gmail username up to three times, with a mandatory 12-month waiting period between each change.
-
Security safeguards: Once a username is changed, the old address will remain permanently linked to the original user, preventing others from claiming it.
Technical considerations
Google has cautioned that changing a primary email identity may trigger security checks similar to signing in on a new device. Users of services such as Chromebooks, Remote Desktop, or apps that rely on “Sign in with Google” may need to reconfigure certain settings. The company has advised users to back up important data before initiating the change to avoid potential disruptions to app-specific preferences.
Availability
According to The Indian Express reports, the feature is being rolled out in phases and may not appear immediately in all Google account settings. Although support pages, including regional language versions, have already been updated, full global availability will be gradual. Users are advised to periodically check their Google Account settings for the new option as the rollout expands.
