New Delhi: The son of a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police looted a bank in Jalandhar, Punjab, on Monday, April 6, at around 2:35 am. The accused is identified as Simranjit Singh alias Amrik Singh, a resident of Green Model Town.
On April 6, two masked men entered a bank and looted Rs 6,27,700 within just two minutes from a branch of state-owned Punjab National Bank and then fled from the scene on their black Activa scooter.
There was no security guard in the branch at the time of the incident. According to sources, the accused had previously conducted a reconnaissance of the bank and was well aware that the crowd inside was sparse during the afternoon hours, and there was no security guard in the bank.

Police have arrested the mastermind, Simranjit, and also recovered half the money, around Rs 3 lakh, from him. The accused is reportedly a drug addict and also has a criminal record with at least two prior cases registered against him in Batala and SAS Nagar, police said.
The Police Commissioner, Dhanpreet Kaur, said that three employees and three customers were present at the time of the incident in the bank after lunch.
An eyewitness confirmed that one of the robbers was wearing a red jacket and armed with a pistol. He went to the cashier and demanded cash, while the other one, who was wearing a blue shirt, stood by with a sharp-edged weapon.
Then the cashier handed over the cash to the robbers, and the accused put the money into a carry bag and fled from the scene.
CCTV cameras recorded the entire incident, and a manhunt is underway for the other one who is still absconded.
