Lamine Yamal might miss the opening matches of Spain’s FIFA World Cup campaign, but the Barcelona prodigy is leaving no stone unturned to ensure he can still make a major impact in the tournament.

The teenage star has been working relentlessly on his recovery after sustaining a hamstring injury, with his full attention on returning to the pitch at the earliest opportunity.

In a recent conversation released by the Spanish Football Federation, Yamal opened up about his injury, his World Cup aspirations, and the mindset that has propelled him to the top tier of world football at such a young age.

Recounting the moment of his injury, Yamal confessed that his immediate worry was about missing the upcoming World Cup.

“I remember the exact moment I got injured. I was praying that it wasn’t serious, hoping it was just a strain or something minor, because the World Cup was just around the corner. I knew that a hamstring injury – even though I had never had one before – would not be an easy or quick recovery.”

“I was scared that it might be serious, or even worse, that it might heal but flare up again, causing me to miss the World Cup.”

The Barcelona forward explained that the thought of representing Spain on football’s grandest stage has been a powerful source of motivation throughout his rehabilitation.

“It helps knowing that you’re preparing to play in a World Cup. It’s as if you haven’t played a single match all season, and I’m incredibly excited to make my debut.”

Reflecting on how swiftly his career has progressed, Yamal said, “In my mind, it feels like I’ve been playing football for 10 years, but in reality, it’s only been three. Four years ago, I was playing with my friends at the local sports ground.”

Continuing his reflection, he added, “So, a boy who was playing alongside you three years ago is now preparing to play in a World Cup. It’s absolutely surreal.”

When asked about the dream of lifting football’s most coveted trophy, Yamal admitted he has pictured that moment countless times. “A thousand times, whether in my bedroom or after winning a match on the local pitch. The World Cup is the pinnacle of football.”

Beyond his technical ability, it is Yamal’s mindset that truly sets him apart from most players of his age. The Barcelona attacker emphasised that he thrives under pressure rather than shying away from it.

“I perform better when the expectations are higher; it pushes you to raise your game. If my standards were the same as everyone else’s, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today.”

“I like it that way; I see it as a challenge and I enjoy it.”

The youngster also voiced strong confidence in Spain’s prospects at the tournament and praised the overall strength of the squad.

“The moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally come. Since the European Championship ended, we’ve been counting down to this day.”

“We’re all incredibly excited. We’re entering as European champions, and we’re going to give everything we have.”

“I’m thrilled because we have an exceptional team and some outstanding players such as Rodri, the Ballon d’Or winner.”

He continued, “Oyarzabal, who’s a fantastic striker; Pedri, whose game I absolutely love; Cucurella, who has been a transformed player since the European Championship; and in goal, we have the three best goalkeepers.”

Confident and ambitious, Yamal remains focused on helping Spain achieve glory at the World Cup, hoping his recovery will allow him to play a vital role in their campaign.
