Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk has voiced his shock over the club’s sudden decision to terminate manager Arne Slot’s contract following a highly disappointing campaign. The experienced centre-back disclosed that the club’s management did not consult him before the Dutch manager was let go, saying he only learnt of the decision after reports surfaced in the media on Saturday.
Unexpected managerial exit
After the Netherlands suffered a 1-0 defeat to Algeria in a World Cup warm-up game, Van Dijk spoke publicly about Slot’s abrupt departure. In an interview with Dutch outlet NOS, the defender admitted that the announcement of his fellow countryman’s sacking came as a huge surprise.
He explained that he had just returned to the Netherlands when he heard the news. “I landed in Amsterdam on Saturday afternoon and then it had already leaked. After that I naturally had conversations. But the decision was already taken,” Van Dijk said. The Reds endured a difficult season, and the club’s quick decision to change the coaching staff left their captain completely stunned.
Disappointing season and Champions League setback
Although Van Dijk plays a vital leadership role, he was not involved in the boardroom discussions that led to Slot’s dismissal. Slot’s reign had seen Liverpool lift a historic Premier League title, but a fifth-place finish and a Champions League quarter-final exit to Paris Saint-Germain eventually sealed his fate.
Liverpool invested a record £446 million during the previous summer transfer window, bringing in players such as Alexander Isak, but inconsistency and internal tensions, particularly involving Mohamed Salah, proved detrimental.
“It is not like they ask me how or what,” Van Dijk said firmly. However, he expressed gratitude towards the departing coaching team. “I spoke with Arne and with Sipke. That is the most important thing for me. I am very grateful to them. For everything they have meant, not only to me but also to the club. I wish them only success. Hopefully the club Liverpool will come out of it well again, because as a club this season was below par,” he added.
Frustration in international duty
Amid the turbulence at Anfield, Van Dijk is concentrating on his international commitments, though the Netherlands’ recent form has been far from ideal. The national side’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Algeria left the captain visibly frustrated as he prepared for the team’s trip to the United States.
“You don’t want this as a send-off match. If you look at the game, I think we should be at least 2-0 up in the first half. But yes, we are not,” he reflected. Pointing out their lack of attacking precision, he continued: “You have to make it more comfortable for yourself. It is clear that things need to be much better. We have Monday for that and then we must be ready for the World Cup.”
What lies ahead for the Netherlands and Liverpool?
With Andoni Iraola emerging as the leading candidate to take over at Anfield and oversee a rebuild, Van Dijk’s immediate focus now shifts to international responsibilities. The Netherlands squad will depart on Thursday, facing one final warm-up match against Uzbekistan on Monday before kicking off their World Cup campaign against Japan on June 14.
