Real Madrid are on the verge of finalising the signing of Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan after activating his €20 million release clause. The Dutch right-back is currently undergoing medical examinations in the Netherlands while being unavailable for his national team’s friendly against Algeria due to suspension. The official confirmation from Los Blancos is expected to come after the upcoming presidential elections at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Real Madrid trigger Dumfries’ release clause
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Real Madrid have formally notified Inter of their decision to activate Dumfries’ €20 million release clause. The La Liga champions have taken all the required steps to secure the 30-year-old full-back, acting swiftly to wrap up the transfer process.
With the legal formalities now underway, Dumfries’ clause will officially come into effect at the start of July, by which time Real Madrid will have completed all arrangements to present him as their new signing.
The Spanish club have placed major importance on strengthening their full-back positions, and this move effectively leaves the Serie A holders without any scope for negotiation as they prepare to part ways with one of their most consistent players.
Medical tests during international break
While the final paperwork between the two clubs is being processed, Dumfries is completing his medical assessments with the Madrid medical team in the Netherlands on Wednesday. The defender is currently suspended for the Netherlands’ friendly against Algeria following his red card in their previous outing, meaning he is not among the substitutes for the match.
This suspension has conveniently given Dumfries the perfect opportunity to complete his medical checks before the transfer is made official. However, Romano notes that Real Madrid will delay the official announcement until their internal presidential elections have concluded.
End of a memorable spell in Milan
The move brings to a close a remarkable five-year stint in Italy for Dumfries. The Dutch international joined Inter Milan from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2021 for €14 million and quickly became an essential part of the team’s setup under multiple managers.
Across 207 matches in all competitions for the Nerazzurri, Dumfries has scored 27 goals and assisted 28 times, highlighting his consistent attacking contributions from the right flank.
During his time at the San Siro, he helped Inter secure two Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia trophies, and three Supercoppa Italiana titles, while also appearing in two UEFA Champions League finals — a testament to his role in the club’s recent success.
Looking ahead to World Cup and Madrid rebuild
With his club future now resolved, Dumfries will turn his attention to representing the Netherlands at the upcoming World Cup. His arrival at Real Madrid will bolster a defence that recently lost Dani Carvajal and will now feature Trent Alexander-Arnold, who notably missed out on an England call-up. As Jose Mourinho is strongly tipped to assume charge at the Bernabeu next season, Dumfries will be keen to make a strong impression on his new manager once his international commitments are over.
