French-Iranian author and film director Marjane Satrapi, who earned worldwide acclaim for her graphic novel series and film Persepolis, has died at the age of 56, AFP quoted a member of her close circle as saying on Thursday.
“Marjane Satrapi died of sadness a little over a year after the death of Mattias Ripa, her husband and the love of her life,” the individual told the news agency.
Satrapi was born in 1969 in northern Iran. She moved to France in 1994 and became a French citizen in 2026.
Persepolis, Satrapi’s graphic novel series published between 2000 and 2003, is an account of her early years in Tehran as she struggled with restrictions put in place by the Iranian government after the 1979 Islamic revolution.
The graphic novel was adapted into a film in 2007. The film Persepolis, directed by Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud, won the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and was also nominated for an Academy Award.
Satrapi was a prominent critic of the Iranian government and had supported the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement that was sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody in 2022.
French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday said that Satrapi was “a great artist who turned her Iranian childhood into a universal tale”, AFP reported.
