Arne Slot has been attracting considerable attention since his departure from Liverpool.

The Dutch coach has quickly become one of the most sought-after managers in European football despite his two-year stint at Anfield ending abruptly just a week after the season concluded.

Reports have linked Slot with several clubs, including AC Milan, Fulham, and his former Eredivisie rivals Ajax. His reputation remains high after guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title in his very first season in charge.

However, Slot’s next managerial role might take a different direction altogether.

The Netherlands national team is expected to be in the market for a new head coach soon, with Ronald Koeman’s contract set to expire following their World Cup campaign this summer.

During the Netherlands’ opening World Cup fixture against Japan, ITV commentator Jon Champion hinted at the possibility of Slot returning to management, referencing the Dutchman’s availability after leaving Liverpool.

“There is a very high-profile Dutch coach currently out of work, of course,” Champion remarked, alluding to Slot’s recent exit from Anfield.

The Netherlands’ first goal of the tournament had a strong Liverpool connection. Captain Virgil van Dijk powered home a header from a precise right-wing cross by Ryan Gravenberch.

Both Van Dijk and Gravenberch, alongside Cody Gakpo, have become indispensable starters for both club and country. Under Slot’s management, they could flourish once again if he were to take up the national team role.

Prior to the World Cup, Van Dijk disclosed that he had a personal conversation with his former Liverpool boss after the surprise sacking that saw Slot replaced by Andoni Iraola.

“I spoke to Arne personally, that is the most important thing,” Van Dijk mentioned at the time. “Exactly what we discussed remains between us. For now, my focus is entirely on the World Cup.”

With Koeman nearing the end of his tenure and Slot currently without a club, the possibility of a reunion between the two key Dutch figures may come sooner than expected.
