Schools in UP will now reopen on June 25. This decision has been taken in view of the severe heat and heatwave conditions prevailing in the state. Here are the full details...

The state government has taken a major decision considering the severe heat and heatwave conditions in UP. The government has extended the summer vacation period for schools run by and recognized under the Basic Education Council. Consequently, classes in primary and upper primary schools across the state will now commence on June 25, 2026. Previously, schools were scheduled to reopen on June 16.

According to the order issued by the Basic Education Department, this decision was made with the health and safety of students in mind. Temperatures are steadily rising in several districts of the state, and hot winds could adversely affect the children. Given this situation, the government decided to keep schools closed for a few more days.

What does the letter say?

The letter issued by the Additional Chief Secretary (Basic Education) states that the duration of the summer vacation has now been permanently fixed starting from the year 2026. Henceforth, summer vacation in Council schools will be observed annually from May 20 to June 24. Regular academic activities will resume on June 25.

The government acknowledges that the state experiences extreme heat during May and June, which can negatively impact children's health. Therefore, the decision to extend the holiday period was taken to provide relief to the students.

When will classes begin?

Although classes for students will start on June 25, teachers and other staff members are required to report to school earlier. According to the order, all teachers, *Shiksha Mitras* (para-teachers), instructors, and non-teaching staff must be present at the schools on June 22, 23, and 24.

What will happen?

Preparations for the new academic session will be carried out in schools during these three days. Teachers have been assigned the tasks of preparing lesson plans, ensuring the availability of textbooks for students, and streamlining other school arrangements.

Additionally, tasks such as reviewing preparations for the Mid-Day Meal scheme, cleaning the school premises—including kitchens and toilets—inspecting drinking water facilities, and making smart classrooms and ICT labs fully operational will be completed during this period. The department's objective is to ensure that students find a better and safer academic environment upon their return to school.

Academics Will Not Be Affected

The Basic Education Department has also clarified that the extension of the holiday period will not disrupt academic activities. Compliance with the mandated 220 working days in schools, as stipulated under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, will be ensured.
