New Delhi: WhatsApp has begun rolling out voice chat functionality to all group sizes, allowing users to initiate real-time audio conversations directly within any group, no matter how big or small. The update makes the feature, previously available only to large groups, accessible to all users running the latest version of the app on Android and iOS.
Unlike traditional WhatsApp calls, the new voice chats operate more like a live audio room. Any member of a group can swipe up from the chat bar and hold to start a session. Crucially, it doesn’t ring or notify group members when activated. Instead, the voice chat is silently pinned to the bottom of the conversation window, allowing others to join or exit at their convenience.
Voice chats now work like live audio rooms within WhatsApp
This change marks a shift in how group communication works on WhatsApp. The platform, owned by Meta, is positioning voice chat as a flexible alternative to voice calls. With no ringing and no pressure to join immediately, the experience is designed to mimic casual audio hangouts seen on platforms like Discord or Telegram.
The pinned interface provides quick access to call controls and shows who is currently active in the chat. Voice chats automatically close after 60 minutes of inactivity, preventing them from running indefinitely in the background.
End-to-end encryption remains in place
WhatsApp confirmed that all voice chats are protected with end-to-end encryption by default, similar to its text messages and regular voice or video calls. This ensures that no third party, including WhatsApp or Meta, can access or listen to the conversations.
Security remains a key pillar for the messaging platform, and the encryption extends to these new real-time audio sessions.
Update rolling out globally in phases
The update is already available for some users who have installed the latest version of WhatsApp from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. It is expected to reach more devices in the coming days.
