Mercedes-AMG Showcases The 1,340 Bhp GT XX Concept

After months of teasing, Mercedes-AMG has finally revealed its flagship EV concept. It is called the GT XX Concept and it has 1,340 bhp. Mercedes for some reason cannot get away from V8’s and despite falling on their head for discontinuing them in some very iconic cars, they are still trying to compensate for the lack of one. So the new concept which is electric can also make V8 noises.

This is going to be the first all AMG car and will go against the likes of the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. From the design point of view, the AMG GT XX concept is a little radical. It is not like other Mercedes models and is something that is completely different. We won’t say that it looks beautiful but it will certainly divide opinion.

The GT XX is based on 800-volt architecture and it can charge at 850 kW. The power is transferred to all four wheels via three electric motors. There are two of them at the rear and one in the front. The motors are also quite interesting. They are integrated in to the electric drive units, have water cooled inverters and also feature planetary gearsets which are oil cooled themselves. While the electric motors themselves make no noise, AMG has done the unthinkable (not really) and the GT XX will make V8 noises. This is nothing sort of sad because we think that AMG is trying too hard with this one.

There is something actually cool in this car and its the wheels. The carbon fibre aero discs help reduce drag but they are electronically controlled and will move outward to channel air to cool the brakes. There is an also rear LED lightbar which is essentially a screen. On the interior front of things, it gives out full race car feels with the Formula-style steering wheel and bucket seats.

This all electric AMG will also pave the future for other AMG cars like their upcoming all EV SUV but the question is if the world really needs it. With electric car sales falling, especially for performance EVs, we are not sure how this will be received by actual buyers. We do believe that this would have done really well if it would have had a proper ICE engine paired to a hybrid powertrain to truly give us the next generation of the hypercar which would compete with the likes of the Ferrari F80 and the McLaren W1 but we can only dream that Mercedes is going to do that.
