Meta is rolling out a new AI-powered feature on WhatsApp called Message Summariesdesigned to help users quickly catch up on unread messages. Instead of scrolling through lengthy chats, users will now see bullet-point summaries highlighting key updates in a conversation.
How It Works
- The Message Summaries feature uses Meta ai to analyze unread chats.
- A small icon appears at the top of a conversation when there are multiple unread messages.
- Tapping this icon generates a concise, bulleted list summarizing the key points from the conversation.
- Summaries are created using Private Processingmeaning your message data stays on your device and is not shared with Meta.
Designed for Busy Users
This new feature is ideal for anyone juggling a busy schedule. Whether you’re in meetings or stepping away from your phone, Message Summaries let you catch up in seconds without reading every message.
Meta AI’s Growing Presence
Meta began integrating its AI tools with WhatsApp in September 2023allowing users to interact with an assistant via a circular blue icon. While this integration initially raised privacy concerns, Meta has since added Advanced Chat Privacy controls to reassure users and offer more control over data access.
How to Enable the Feature
Message Summaries are optional and turned off by default. To activate:
- Go to Settings > Chats > Private Processing
- Enable summaries and choose which chats you want AI to access using the Advanced Chat Privacy settings.
Availability
Currently, the feature is being rolled out in English across the United States. Meta has stated that support for more languages and regions is on the way later this year.
Part of a Bigger AI Push
Meta’s move to integrate AI into WhatsApp follows similar efforts by other tech giants, such as Apple’s text summarization tools and OpenAI’s image generation on WhatsApp. It’s part of a broader shift to make AI more useful in everyday digital tools.
Conclusion: Smarter Messaging, On Your Terms
With Message Summaries, WhatsApp becomes not just a messaging app but a smarter productivity tool. And with privacy-first design, users can enjoy AI convenience without compromising their personal data.
