Billions of people around the world share their memories through Facebook and Instagram. But now the new policy of META has started a new debate about privacy. Social media giants now want not only the photos uploaded on social media, but also the private photos present in your phone gallery – that too without your knowledge.
What is ‘Cloud Processing’ feature?
Recently, many Facebook users received a pop-up notification, asking to turn on the ‘Cloud Processing’ feature. If you turn it on, Meta is allowed to scan your gallery and store the unhappy photos on your cloud.
META claims that this will give you “Creative Sajation” such as collages, birthday filters and AI-generated Recipes, but the real objective is to train Meta AI from your personal photos.
AI training with photos
Through this feature, Meta can remove data from your photos such as identification of faces, location, timestamp and identity of goods. The company says that this is an opt-in feature, which can be closed anytime, but the question is-does the common user understand it?
Data collection has been going on since 2007
META itself admitted that it has used all public photos since 2007 for AI training. But what is the scope of public? Are pictures uploaded at the age of 13 years are also being used now?
How to avoid this surveillance?
- Go to Settings of Facebook App
- Search for options like “Cloud Processing” or “Camera Roll Access”
- If it’s on, close immediately
- META claims that all gallery photos will be removed within 30 days of closing
Bihar is the first state in the country where E-Voting will be from mobile app, know how to identify
Note
This step of Meta once again shows that the confrontation between AI and privacy is continuously increasing. Users will now have to be alert which feature is only convenience and who can make a dent in their privacy.
