Synopsis

The Election Commission of India's distribution of enumeration forms for electoral roll revision in Bihar has sparked intense political debate. Opposition parties, led by RJD and Congress, are raising concerns about the ECI's intentions, alleging it aims to disenfranchise eligible voters, while NDA allies are supporting the verification process, viewing it as a reform to the election process.

Politics over the revision of electoral roll in Bihar has got intense with the Election Commission of India (ECI) distributing the enumeration forms across the state. As per the Chief Electoral Office of Bihar, over one crore enumeration forms have been distributed across the state, covering several districts.

District and block-level officers such as DM, Block Development Officers have participated in the distribution programme to create awareness about the revision of the electoral roll among the common people. Political parties have also appointed booth level agents (BLAs) to participate in the verification of voters on their respective booths.

While the exercise is going on, the Opposition is also moving ahead seeking time from the ECI. Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh was in Patna on Sunday and held a press conference on the issue. "I met Laluji and requested him to speak to Congress president Khargeji. Together we will seek time from the ECI," Singh told mediapersons.

RJD, the main Opposition party, which has appointed more than 47,000 BLAs, is strongly opposing the ECI's move. "Rather than justifying the intention of this move, the ECI is busy in giving unsubstantiated and unverified claims like infiltration and illegal voters for conducting the exercise. Anyone can easily read between the lines that it is being done to deny the right to vote to eligible persons rather than the opposite as being argued by the ECI. This bears an uncanny resemblance with the NRC done by the government in Assam," senior RJD leader Manoj Jha told ET.

BJP national media co-incharge Sanjay Mayukh said that the parties in Opposition have accepted defeat. "The Opposition is crying over the defeat which they are going to face in the assembly elections. Everyone should not only welcome this exercise but also help the ECI in the exercise," he told ET.

Meanwhile, NDA allies have supported the ECI's move to verify the voter roll. "Whatever the ECI is doing to reform the election and voting process should be welcomed by everyone and we are completely in support of this. Our BLAs are helping the ECI voter verification at every booth," JDU chief spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan told ET.

NDA partners in Bihar - Chirag Paswan of LJP (RV), Jitan Manjhi of HAM and Upendra Kushwaha of RLM - have announced their support for the exercise.
