Netflix hosted an extravagant victory parade in Seoul, South Korea, in honor of Squid Game, its most watched series of all time. The iconic blockbuster series, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk became a sleeper hit for the streaming service upon its first season’s debut in 2019. Since then, anticipation around the series’s second and third seasons was rabid in the lead-up to their respective releases.

With the international recognition and acclaim the series has gotten, to the point of becoming a media franchise, it’s no surprise that Squid Game is considered a matter of national pride in South Korea. The parade comes after the conclusion of Squid Game season 3, which was the final season of the show’s original storyline. However, going by season 3’s closing scenes, as well as prior reports regarding David Fincher, an international spin-off set in the United States could very well happen.

Squid Game hosts victory parade at Gwanghwamun Gate

Squid Game’s victory parade happened on June 28 at Seoul’s historic Gwanghwamun Gate. From there, the procession marched all the way to Seoul Plaza. The parade was attended by series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, along with 25 of its cast members from all three seasons. This parade was a direct collaboration between Netflix and the Seoul Metropolitan Government, and had been organized for about a year. The parade drew massive crowds, with the numbers swelling to as many as 38,000.

Squid Game actors and online influencers were present at the parade

Among the Squid Game cast members who attended the fan event were the two primary leads, Lee Jung-jae and Lee Byung-hun. The former played the series protagonist Seong Gi-hun, while the latter played the villainous Front Man of the Squid Games. Lee Jung-jae commented that after all the years of working on and promoting the series, he could finally feel it was all over during the parade.

Lee Byung-hun revealed that he originally considered his role a simple cameo in season 1, but his expanded role in seasons 2 and 3 made him dig deep and truly understand the role. Among the online influencers attending the event was Mexican influencer Brian Skabeche, who travelled all the way from his home country to South Korea specifically for the event. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he revealed that he became a fan of Squid Game after watching it with his sister, who’d been stuck at home recovering from an injury. All three seasons of Squid Game are available for streaming on Netflix.
