Protest Against NCHAC Leadership

Haflong, July 1: Tensions have emerged within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam's Dima Hasao district as a faction of party members organized a protest on Tuesday, calling for the resignation of Debolal Gorlosa, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC).

The demonstrators, mainly BJP supporters, assembled outside the Deputy Commissioner's office in Haflong, brandishing placards and symbolic begging bowls to draw attention to their unpaid work dues.

They accused Gorlosa of intentionally delaying payments due to ongoing political conflicts within the council.

The protestors have issued a deadline of July 15, demanding Gorlosa's resignation if their outstanding payments are not settled by that date.

Anup Langthasa, one of the protestors, expressed, “We’ve waited for months. Our families are suffering. This is no longer about politics — it’s about survival,” emphasizing their frustration after unfulfilled promises.

Another protestor criticized the CEM’s 'dictatorial approach,' claiming it was stifling grassroots development and warned that many workers might resign if the situation does not improve.

The group alleged that ongoing disputes between Gorlosa and another council member have stalled payments and projects, threatening livelihoods and hindering development in the region.

While the protestors claimed their actions stemmed from frustration rather than political motives, the demonstration has highlighted growing dissatisfaction within the ruling party's local ranks.

In response, BJP Dima Hasao District President Dhriti Thaosen distanced the party from the protest, stating, “The demonstration was not officially endorsed by the BJP,” and called for unity and restraint.

He added, “Dima Hasao is undergoing administrative recovery, and under CEM Gorlosa's leadership, efforts are being made to improve governance. I urge all party members not to be swayed by disruptive forces.”

Despite calls for calm, the protest underscores the rising tensions within the district's BJP unit and raises concerns about the party's internal unity ahead of significant council decisions.
