Connectivity Issues in Cachar District
Silchar, July 3: The Cachar district in Assam experienced another connectivity challenge on Wednesday when a temporary bamboo bridge over the Harang River, erected as an emergency solution, was swept away by a sudden surge in water levels.
This bamboo structure was put in place following the collapse of the main bridge on the Silchar–Kalain National Highway.
Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries, but the incident has raised fresh concerns among the local population.
Cachar District Commissioner Mridul Yadav informed that the construction of a new iron suspension bridge is already underway, managed by the Public Works Department (PWD).
“Work commenced this evening, and we are optimistic that the suspension bridge will be ready by Saturday to facilitate basic transportation,” stated DC Yadav.
The previous concrete bridge collapsed two weeks ago, causing significant disruption to transport and impacting communities on both banks of the river.
Initially, authorities had suggested a Bailey bridge as a temporary fix, with an estimated completion time of two weeks. However, progress has been slower than anticipated.
Addressing concerns regarding the delays, DC Yadav mentioned, “The materials for the Bailey bridge have arrived at the site. An engineering team from Ranchi is expected to arrive on Saturday, after which construction will commence. Due to logistical challenges, we now expect that completion may take an additional two weeks.”
In a related update, the Deputy Commissioner also noted that repair work on the crucial Gammon Bridge over the Barak River at Badarpurghat is on track and is anticipated to be finished by the scheduled date of July 20.
Meanwhile, the daily lives of commuters and residents continue to be severely affected, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable infrastructure solutions.
