Mobile consumers may soon feel more burden on the pocket, as telecom companies may increase mobile tariffs by 10 to 12 percent by the end of this year. According to an Economic Times report, May 2025 saw a record increase in the number of active users and data consumption, which has further increased the earnings of companies.

Recently, prices were increased

According to experts, tariffs have been increased from 11 to 23 percent in July 2024 itself. In such a situation, another increase may be overshadowed by consumers. Analysts also believe that next time companies can apply tier pricing models, which can limit the benefits in large data plans.

Record breaking user growth

The total figure reached 1.08 billion after joining 7.4 million new active users in May 2025. This was the biggest increase in the last 29 months. During this time Reliance Jio added 5.5 million users, while Airtel added 1.3 million users. Jio’s stake has now reached 53% and Airtel’s 36%.

Secondary SIM trend returned

A senior telecom official said, “The rapidly increasing number of users in May is not only a sign of accepting the tariff increase, but also returns to the re -use of secondary sim.” He says that now tariff -based competition is left behind and further user growth will depend on the expansion of 5G.

Pressure on weaker sections already

According to analysts, lower income users are already struggling with tariffs. In such a situation, the next increase can affect the mid and upper income categories, especially on the mid and upper income categories.

A telecom expert said, “A potential increase of 10-12% will not apply equally to all users. Mid and high-incoured groups may have to bear the most impact.”
