Shubman Gill, recently appointed as India’s Test captain, has made an immediate impact both as a leader and with the bat.
In his debut series as skipper, he is currently the top run-scorer and is now closing in on a monumental achievement—breaking a record held by Sir Don Bradman for nearly nine decades.
Gill on Brink of History
In the 1936-37 Ashes series, legendary Australian batter Don Bradman scored 810 runs in just 5 Tests while leading his side, averaging 90—a record for the most runs in a Test series as captain. For 88 years, no one has come close to surpassing this iconic milestone.
Shubman Gill, with 585 runs already to his name in this ongoing five-match Test series against England, has batted at an astonishing average of 146.25, smashing three centuries along the way. With two matches still to go, Gill needs just 225 more runs to eclipse Bradman’s historic tally.
A big knock at Lord’s could see him rewrite the record books.
Following India’s emphatic 336-run win at Edgbaston, Gill announced that Jasprit Bumrah would return for the third Test at Lord’s. Bumrah, who missed the second Test, had earlier delivered a strong performance in the series opener, even though England successfully chased down a stiff fourth-innings target of 371.
In contrast, the second Test saw India dominate from start to finish, posting 608 runs before bowling England out for 271, leveling the series 1-1. With momentum on their side and Bumrah rejoining the XI, India will look to gain the upper hand in the series at the iconic Lord’s.
All Eyes on Lord’s
With form, confidence, and history on his side, Shubman Gill now has the chance to do what no captain has done in nearly nine decades—outscore Bradman in a single Test series. A big innings at Lord’s could not only put India ahead in the series but also place Gill’s name alongside the greatest milestones in Test history.
