The suggestion to remove chapters related to religion and politics from DU's syllabus has created a ruckus. Teachers also have different opinions on this.

Delhi University (DU) is once again in the headlines for curriculum change. This time it has been recommended to remove several chapters from the Political Science and History syllabus taught at the Post Graduate (PG) level of the university. The Standing Committee of the University has suggested removing some chapters which are considered religiously, ideologically, or politically sensitive.

Which chapters are recommended to be removed?

Possible chapters to be removed from Political Science:

'Hindu Nationalism: A Reader' (Christophe Jaffrelot) - Reflects the ideology of Hindu nationalism.

'In the Belly of the River' (Amita Baviskar) - Based on the Narmada movement and tribal rights.

‘Public Policy in South Asia’ – It discusses the alleged 'Hinduisation' of the tribals.

‘Routine Violence’ (Gyanendra Pandey) – It includes right-wing ideology and comments on Gandhi-Savarkar-Golwalkar.

Chapters suggested to be removed from History:

‘Sultan Among Hindu Kings’ (Philip B. Wagner) – Shows Islamic influence in Vijayanagara.

‘The Rise of Islam and the Bengal Frontier’ (Richard Eaton) – Focuses on the socio-economic expansion of Islam in Bengal.

Controversial subjects were removed earlier as well

It is worth noting that in June 2025 also, DU had decided to remove the entire paper related to Pakistan, China and Islam from the subject of 'Global Politics'. The university administration argued that these subjects could cause ideological conflict and disagreement among the students.

What is the university's argument?

The course review panel and the university administration believe that these topics are very sensitive and can lead to conflict or tension among students during studies. Therefore, it has been suggested to remove them to maintain peace and a positive academic environment.

Divided opinions among teachers and students

There are two opinions in the academic world regarding this move of DU. On the one hand, some teachers believe that removing such topics raises questions on academic freedom, while on the other hand, some say that avoiding controversial topics is in the interest of students.

What will happen next?

At present, the final decision to remove these chapters has not been taken. A formal decision will be taken on this in the next meeting of the university. Till then, the eyes of students and teachers will remain fixed on the decision of DU.
