Delhi University will implement its four-year undergraduate programme according to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 from this academic year. The switch, which means a total transformation of the current three-year curriculum, will introduce greater academic flexibility for the students, greater research opportunities, and enhanced employability. The shift will be guided by the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022, which enables the students to graduate after one, two, or three years with a certificate, diploma, or degree, respectively. Those who continue for the fourth year will get the opportunity to conduct advanced research and even directly apply for PhD courses in some instances.Dean of Academic Affairs, Prof. Bharat Rampani, shared that all 64 DU colleges have been actively engaged in preparing for the shift. “We’ve had regular meetings with principals to ensure a smooth rollout of the National Academic Programme (NAP). The feedback has been encouraging, and colleges are confident in handling any initial challenges,” Rampani said, as reported by Shiksha.Colleges across the university have taken steps to adapt to the new structure. At Delhi College of Arts & Commerce, Principal Dr. Rajeev Chopra said the four-year model is a step forward in aligning Indian education with global standards. “Students can now explore research without having to go abroad. It also reduces the financial burden on families,” he stated. The college has upgraded infrastructure and ensured faculty training to match the new academic demands.Ramanujan College has already seen enthusiastic responses from students, with over 70% opting to continue into the fourth year. Principal Dr. Rasal Singh said the college has extended class timings, hired more guest faculty, and invested in library and lab enhancements. “The students see value in continuing—they know this could improve their job and academic prospects,” Singh added. On the other hand, Principal Dr. Ravindra Kumar Gupta of PGDAV College Evening shared that the physical readiness of the campus has been a priority. “We’ve constructed new porta cabins to accommodate more classes. The university’s backing has been instrumental,” he said. This isn’t DU’s first experiment with a four-year format—the university briefly introduced a similar model in 2013, but it was rolled back due to strong opposition. This time, however, the program is being implemented in a more structured and nationally backed framework under NEP 2020.
