In a rare and soul-baring conversation with Siddharth Kannan, singer-composer Amaal Mallik opened up like never before. Known for crafting melodies that touch hearts, Amaal revealed the personal heartbreak and professional betrayal that shaped one of the most turbulent yet creatively intense chapters of his life — during the making of Kabir Singh.

“This is the first time I’m talking about my relationship”

For the first time publicly, Amaal spoke about a deeply personal relationship that spanned five years — from 2014 to 2019 — and ended in heartbreak.

“The girl I was in a relationship with at that point in time married someone else. I was about to perform a gig when she called and said she’s getting married but would elope if I came to her,” he shared.

But the issue wasn’t just emotional — it was also rooted in prejudice. Amaal explained that the girl’s parents objected to both his Muslim identity and his profession in the film industry.

“They didn’t want their daughter to be associated with someone from Bollywood. They were Jaats and said, ‘You’re from an Islamic background.’ I was like, there’s not even an ‘I’ of Islam in me.”

Amaal, who comes from a culturally diverse family — a Muslim father and a Saraswat Brahmin Hindu mother — clarified that religion never defined him or his family.

“We go to Mt Mary when we feel empty. We believe in God but we don’t fear God. There’s no ‘kattar’ anything in us. In fact, their problem was more with the industry than religion.”

Ultimately, it was the prejudice and closed mindset that led to the end of the relationship. “To be judged based on my surname or the fact that I’m part of Bollywood — I knew then that these were not my kind of people. I need broad-minded people. I don’t think our relationship would have worked in the long run.”

Amaal Talks About Industry Politics

Time has given Amaal perspective. While the pain was real, he now sees the heartbreak as a blessing.

“Now, I don’t miss her. That chapter’s long gone. I’ve been on dates since, but nothing’s worked. My lifestyle is my problem. I do feel lonely at times, though.”

Adding to his personal turmoil was a major letdown on the professional front during Kabir Singh. Amaal recalled pouring his heart into the project, creating six songs in just 20 minutes during a jam session with director Sandeep Reddy Vanga. But only one track made it into the final cut.

“There was heavy politics. I was reduced to one song, and that too because Sandeep fought for me. Not that betrayals don’t happen anymore — but back then, I was already heartbroken. It hit me hard.”

Despite the pain and disillusionment, Amaal Mallik has come out of the storm more grounded and reflective. He’s no longer chasing validation — he’s looking for peace.

“We neutrally respect every religion. I believe in karma. That’s what guides me now.”
