‘Didn’t You Consult Anyone Before Marrying?’: Doctor Allegedly Advised Couple Against Having Wedding, Kids

What should have been a routine health check-up turned into a deeply unsettling experience for a young couple visiting Apollo Hospital in Indiranagar, Bengaluru.
During an eye examination, the attending doctor allegedly advised them not to have children and even questioned their decision to marry because both suffer from myopia. The couple described the remarks as inappropriate, unscientific, and "completely out of line." In a post shared on Reddit, the man detailed how the situation unfolded. He and his wife had gone in for a full-body check-up, which included an eye test. What they expected to be a straightforward consultation quickly spiraled into something they described as "one of the most uncomfortable clinic visits we've had." The tech professional, who spends around 10 hours a day in front of a screen, said the doctor began by asking where he and his wife were from a question the couple found irrelevant. The doctor then warned that his cylindrical power and astigmatism were a serious concern and strongly advised him to reduce screen time or even consider changing his profession, implying his health was at risk. "He told me I couldn't continue in this profession, made it sound like my life would be in danger, which felt like baseless fear-mongering," he wrote. The situation escalated during his wife's examination. Upon learning that the two were married, the doctor allegedly brought the husband back in and remarked, "Didn't you consult anyone before deciding to marry? Two people with myopia shouldn't get married. Your kids will suffer at an early age. Think and take consultation before conceiving." The techie was stunned by the suggestion that people should consult an eye specialist before getting married or planning a family, calling the experience "deeply unprofessional." He clarified that both he and his wife have mild, manageable cases of myopia and astigmatism , were not severe or life threatening. Their visit had nothing to do with genetic counseling or serious ocular disease. Instead, they were left feeling judged and made to question their personal choices over something entirely manageable with corrective lenses. The couple also questioned the doctor's qualifications and experience, identifying him as Abhi HG. They felt his conduct reflected either a lack of proper training or unchecked overconfidence, and urged Apollo Hospital to ensure its consultants are both properly trained and held to professional standards. The incident sparked widespread discussion online. One Reddit user pointed out, "A BSc in ophthalmic test is an optometrist, not an ophthalmologist and definitely not an MBBS qualified doctor. I'm amazed how a reputable chain like Apollo is letting an optometrist do consults." Others chimed in to explain that myopia is not typically inherited in a deterministic way, and is now considered a global issue affecting large parts of the population. Another individual shared a similar experience at the same facility, "The same eye doctor recommended that I switch careers due to the screen time involved and suggested walking barefoot on grass, claiming this would eliminate my need for glasses." A qualified ophthalmologist also commented on the thread, stating bluntly, "Everything that kid told you is wrong. You guys have probable cause to raise a complaint against that optometrist with his employer." As the post began to circulate, the original poster shared an update that while they had been planning to file a formal complaint, a representative from Apollo Hospital contacted them directly. The hospital reportedly apologized for the incident and requested that the Reddit post be taken down.
