As the rains bring much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat, they also bring along increased humidity, slower digestion, and a higher chance of infections.
In Ayurveda, monsoon is seen as a season when the body's natural "Agni" or digestive fire tends to weaken, making it more prone to accumulating toxins or "Ama." This is why it becomes crucial to shift towards a lighter, more nourishing diet that not only supports digestion but also naturally detoxifies the body. The right foods during this season can help you feel lighter, more energetic, and less bloated, all while keeping seasonal illnesses at bay. So, what exactly should you be eating when the skies are grey and your cravings call for something fried? According to Ayurveda, the key lies in warm, freshly cooked, easy-to-digest meals that are dosha-balancing and inflammation-reducing. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Vaidya Smita Naram, Co-Founder of Ayushakti, shares foods to eat during the daily season to detoxify the body, supporting immunity and gut health. This diet removes toxins, cleanses the body, restores balance and restores health. During monsoon, it is important to keep your digestive system proper with the right kind of diet as per your doshas. Vaidya Smita Naram states, "You can start your day with cumin and ginger water to ignite your digestive system. This should be followed by having a light breakfast like moong chillas, mixed vegetable soup or pumpkin soup." For lunch, you can have mung dal khichdi with ghee, steamed vegetables like Ash gourd, pumpkin, bottle gourd, long gourd, snake gourd, squashed, zucchini, etc., and warm soups. One should avoid cold, raw or oily foods that can aggravate Vata and Kapha doshas. Avoid fermented foods like dosas, idli, curd, processed foods, tangy tomatoes, imlis etc., which can increase inflammation in the body and make you feel bloated and lethargic. These teas help in reducing inflammation and also detox the body." This has to be done continuously for a week to help you in natural detoxification. This process includes staying on herbal tea or CCF tea and having boiled/steamed vegetables along with boiled mung or mung soup only. One should only indulge in having meals if hungry. You can also make it spicy and good for your gut by adding a lot of ginger, cumin, coriander powder, curry leaves, coriander leaves and hing. You can also have a nice kadha once or twice a week, to strengthen your immunity during this season.
