Aadhaar biometric update for Children: UIDAI is now going to start biometric update of children's Aadhaar cards through schools across the country soon. This process will be implemented in a phased manner in the next two months. According to UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, the biometric update of more than 7 crore children who have crossed the age of 5 years has not been done yet, which is mandatory.
What is the need for a biometric update?
After the age of 5, the update of fingerprint and iris scan in the Aadhaar of children is mandatory. If the mandatory biometric update (MBU) is not done on time, the Aadhaar number of the child may also be deactivated. According to UIDAI rules:
Biometric update is free for children aged 5 to 7 years.
After 7 years, a fee of ₹ 100 will have to be paid for the update.
How will the biometric update be done through schools?
UIDAI is going to start a new project, under which the biometric update of children will be done through schools. This process will be done with the consent of the parents so that children can easily get this service in the school itself. Under this, biometric machines will be sent to each district, which will move from one school to another, so that this facility can reach as many children as possible. At present, this technology is being tested, and this scheme will be implemented in a phased manner in the next 45 to 60 days.
In the future, UIDAI is also planning to implement the second biometric update (Second MBU) required after the age of 15 through schools and colleges. At present, the Aadhaar of children below 5 years of age is made without biometric data. But after 5 years, their biometric update becomes necessary.
Why is a biometric update necessary?
It is very important to have a biometric update in the Aadhaar card of children on time, as it is linked to many government and private services. With the help of updated Aadhaar, children can easily get the benefits of school admission, scholarships, entrance examinations, and other government schemes like DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer). UIDAI says, "We want children to get all government benefits on time and the simplest and most effective way to do this is through schools." The accuracy of biometric data ensures that children are not deprived of any government scheme.
