
Atal Setu which is also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) is the title of India’s longest sea bridge. It is spread across 21.8 kilometres across both sea and land its construction involved a total investment of over Rs 17840 crore. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) IHI Infrastructure Systems Daewoo Engineering and Tata Projects Limited played a major role in building this massive project. What Is Atal Setu? Also referred to as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link Atal Setu stretches 21.8 km out of which 16.5 km runs over the sea while the remaining 5.5 km lies over land. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the bridge in January last year. The construction cost was more than Rs 17840 crore which made it one of the most expensive infrastructure projects in the country. Who Built Atal Setu? The Mumbai-side segment including the land-based work near Sewri was handled by India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Japan’s IHI Infrastructure Systems. The Navi Mumbai-side segment was constructed by Daewoo Engineering and Tata Projects Limited. Why Is Atal Setu Important? Atal Setu has improved connectivity between Navi Mumbai International Airport and Mumbai International Airport. It has also reduced travel time from Mumbai to South India Pune and Goa. Additionally it has enhanced access between Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) and Mumbai Port and increased logistics efficiency. The bridge is also considered a major economic driver for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region enhancing trade commerce and overall economic activity by improving connectivity and cutting down commute times. Atal Setu is considered a modern engineering marvel featuring multiple safety and structural innovations. It has been designed to support bi-directional traffic flow for smooth and safe travel for commuters.
