Andre Russell’s final appearance in international cricket ended in disappointment for the all-rounder as well as the West Indies team as they succumbed to an eight-wicket loss in the second T20I match against Australia at the Sabina Park in Kingston on Wednesday. Russell who was playing his final two T20I matches for West Indies after announcing his retirement last week ended up on the losing side both times at his home ground in Kingston. In his final innings in international cricket ‘Dre Russ’ smashed 36 off 15 balls with four sixes and two fours to power the home side to 172 for 8 after they were struggling at 98 for 5 at one stage in the second T20I match. However the 173-run target wasn’t enough for Mitchell Marsh’s side as they overhauled the target with more than 4 overs to spare for the loss of just 2 wickets. Inglis and Green posted unbeaten 131 runs to surpass 118 runs put on by Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell. Inglis remained unbeaten on 78 from 33 balls while Green scored his second successive T20I fifty was 56 off 32 balls. Green had also scored a half-century on Sunday in Australia’s three-wicket win to open the series. The back-to-back wins at Sabina Park extended Australia’s winning streak to five in the Caribbean following the 3-0 Test series sweep. Andre Russell’s last show In his last innings in international cricket the Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder was at his vintage best the kind of shot-making which helped him win two T20 World Cups and star in domestic T20 leagues around the world. The 37-year-old all-rounder went in at 98 for 5 and dominated a 41-run sixth-wicket stand with Rovman Powell. Russell clobbered sixes on three of the first four balls off Ben Dwarshuis in the 15th over going down the ground over the sightscreen top-edging over the wicketkeeper and hitting over the midwicket boundary. In another over against leg-spinner Adam Zampa Russell cut for four and then hoisted the next ball into the second tier of the stadium for six. The onslaught put so much pressure on Zampa that the experienced Australian spinner bowled consecutive wides. The all-rounder was retained for Rs 12 crore by Shah Rukh Khan’s KKR ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction last year. Russell turned out in 1 Test 56 ODIs and 85 T20 games for the West Indies. He scored 1034 ODI runs at a strike-rate of 130.22 and 1086 T20I runs with strike-rate of 162.08. He also claimed 70 ODI and 62 T20I wickets. “I just want to say thanks again. I’m very grateful to end my career here. I played in front of my home crowd family and friends. The result didn’t go my way but at the end of the day I’m happy and grateful. The crowd has been amazing in the last two games” Russell said in the post-match presentation. “I really appreciate it. We tried our best. I feel like it’s time for me to just hang it up and wish the boys all the best moving forward. Im very grateful for this amazing international career finishing at Sabina Park” he added. Both teams had formed a guard of honor for Russell to walk onto the field before the match. The Australian players shook his hand and patted his back as he walked back to the pavilion following his innings. The Australian bowlers shared the wickets in the first innings with Zampa taking 3 for 29 Glenn Maxwell returning 2/15 and Nathan Ellis finishing with 2/34. For the West Indies some sloppy fielding including at least five dropped catches hurt their chances of defending the total. The T20I series moves to St. Kitts for the next three games on Friday Saturday and Monday with Australia leading 2-0.
